Fixy takes home International Green Apple Award

19 November 2025

The brilliant blue van with a big mission has been recognised on a global stage for making a real difference to the planet and to people’s lives. On Monday 17th November, they headed to the House of Lords in London to receive an International Green Apple Environment Award.

Managed by Resource Futures, in partnership with Somerset Council and DonateIT, Fixy – a groundbreaking mobile reuse initiative tackling e-waste – stood out among more than 700 entries for its outstanding contribution to environmental sustainability and community engagement.

“Winning a Green Apple Award is a huge honour and a powerful endorsement of Fixy’s mission to empower communities to embrace electrical repair and reuse and make it accessible to everyone. It’s a celebration of the communities we’ve worked with, our dedicated partners, and the thousands of devices we’ve saved from waste.”
Linda Hull, Fixy Project Co-ordinator

Electrical waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the UK, and most of us aren’t sure what to do with our old devices. Enter Fixy. Fixy offers a practical, community-driven service that brings repair and reuse directly to people’s doorsteps.

Since hitting the road in 2022, Fixy has given electricals a second life through repair, refurbishment and redistribution. Across Somerset, Fixy has sparked more than 8,700 conversations with residents, saved more than 13.4 tonnes of electrical items from landfill or incineration, and redistributed refurbished devices to those in digital poverty.

Here’s what’s really exciting: Fixy isn’t just fixing broken devices – it’s changing mindsets. After meeting Fixy:

  • 68% of people said they’re more likely to buy refurbished or second-hand electricals.
  • 83% felt committed to repairing rather than discarding their electricals.

The entirely grant funded project wouldn’t exist without its partners and funders. Over the years, support from Ecosurety, Material Focus’ Electricals Recycling Fund, the Hinkley Point C Community Fund, and the National Lottery’s Awards for All – with bridge funding provided by Somerset Council and SUEZ – has kept Fixy’s wheels in motion. Together, they’ve supported the creation of new repair groups, enabled electricals recycling trials in flats, and helped bridge the digital divide.

While Fixy’s journey began in Somerset; this is only the beginning of its story. Discussions are already underway to expand the Fixy project to new regions and formats.

“This Award energises us to keep expanding Fixy’s reach and impact across the UK. We’re excited about the opportunities this recognition brings to deepen our impact on addressing the national e-waste challenge – especially the opportunity to work with forward-thinking funders and businesses who share our commitment to sustainability.”

In some planters are canes growing peas. All plants appear to be seasonal summer vegetables. To the back right of the image are some sheds and the community allotment continues right through the image
