Cary Repair Café: A Year of Remarkable Achievements

This year has been a truly exceptional one for the Cary Repair Café.

  • September saw the group honoured with the BBC “Make a Difference” Green Award for Somerset, recognising their environmental contributions.
  • Early October brought a substantial grant to support the development of a website and enhance communication efforts.
  • By the end of October, the Café celebrated a major milestone: the 500th appliance—an electric drill—was brought in for repair, and its owner received a small prize to mark the occasion.

These achievements are the result of countless hours of dedicated service by a team of twenty volunteers who welcome guests, carry out repairs, and serve refreshments. Their collective efforts have led to:

  • Over 400 items being given a new lease of life, including food mixers, children’s toys, vacuum cleaners, battery-powered tools, radios, strimmers, lawn mowers, and even a machine that deals identical hands of cards for bridge competitions. Clothing repairs have also been popular, with jumpers darned, trousers shortened, and zips replaced.
  • One ton of material saved from the energy-intensive process of recycling—or worse, from ending up in landfill.

The Cary Repair Café offers a warm, welcoming environment where visitors can enjoy refreshments while having their items repaired. Sessions are held on the fourth Saturday of each month (except December) at the Methodist Church Hall from 10:00 to 12:00.

New faces are warmly welcomed to come along and see the work in action. If you would like to join in and support please email Stephen Rhymer caryrepaircafe@gmail.com or call on 07972588586.

A picture of a community allotment. wooden planters are in neat rows with small paths between them. Within the planters are different green leafy plants of varying heights. In some planters are canes growing peas. All plants appear to be seasonal summer vegetables. To the back right of the image are some sheds and the community allotment continues right through the image
