Open Doors Somerset: Bringing Repair to Crewkerne

On Saturday 27th September, Crewkerne buzzed with excitement as the town welcomed its brand new Repair Café, the latest community initiative to join the growing repair movement across Somerset.

CAG Somerset was delighted to be there, lending a hand and celebrating the fantastic work of Open Doors Somerset, who’ve brought this inspiring new project to life.

Supporting Community Action

At CAG Somerset, we’re proud to support a network of local groups working to make a real difference.  Everything from groups focussed on repair, reuse, climate action, composting, surplus food use and sustainable behaviour change.

Our support is always tailored to each group’s journey. Sometimes that means sharing resources and templates; other times, it’s helping to access our small grants fund for vital tools or equipment.  This time, that support was a friendly face to meet and greet repair visitors and help with taking some photos and video to document the occasion. It was great to be celebrating a new project’s beginning and documenting the community spirit behind it.

Repair Magic in Crewkerne

The George Reynolds Centre was already alive with activity when we arrived. Tools at the ready, kettles boiling, and tables filled with friendly faces. The enthusiasm was infectious.

One visitor brought in a vintage footstool in need of some love. Just as it seemed a tricky job, a volunteer stepped forward from behind the tea station with expert re-upholstery advice and a plan was hatched to finish the project at the next café. It’s these moments of shared skill and kindness that make the Repair Café movement so special.

Community Support in Action

Crewkerne’s Mayor, Alice Samuel, also dropped by to show her support and congratulate the team.  This was a wonderful boost for the volunteers who’ve worked so hard to make this idea a reality.

Join the Fix it Fun!

The next Repair Café takes place on Friday 11th October at the George Reynolds Centre.

Got a lamp, hoover, or much-loved teddy that needs some TLC? Bring it along and meet the team!

In some planters are canes growing peas. All plants appear to be seasonal summer vegetables. To the back right of the image are some sheds and the community allotment continues right through the image
