People power in action: Celebrating volunteers in 2026

From 1st to 7th June 2026, we’re proud to celebrate National Volunteer Week — a time to recognise and thank the incredible people who give their time, energy, and passion to support their communities.

At the heart of every strong and connected community are volunteers. Whether it’s organising local events, leading sustainability projects, or stepping in wherever help is needed, volunteers are the driving force behind so much positive change. Their contributions may not always be visible, but their impact is undeniable.

Over the past year, the CAG (Community Action Groups) network has gone from strength to strength, with an incredible 75% growth in membership. This reflects not only the growing interest in community-led environmental action, but also the dedication of volunteers bringing people together and making things happen.

As one member shared:

“Good to be part of a network of people thinking positively about helping our communities to help themselves. Hoping to access some of the advice to enhance our project.”
Helena Power – Church community outreach worker

This sense of shared purpose and mutual support runs throughout the network. Another volunteer captured it perfectly in our 2025 survey:

“The camaraderie of volunteers and their dedication to helping others in need is an inspiration.”

In October 2025 we surveyed the volunteers of our CAG members to ensure we are matching our offer with their needs, and this is what they told us about their experience of volunteering;

  • 83% felt better connected to their community
  • 79% enjoyed themselves and had fun
  • 71% made new friends

From boosting wellbeing to building meaningful relationships, volunteering creates a positive ripple effect for individuals as well as communities.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week 2026, we want every volunteer to know just how valued they are. Your time, enthusiasm, and commitment form the foundation of everything we do. You are helping to build stronger, greener, and more connected communities across Somerset.

From all of us at CAG, thank you for everything you do.

People powered change

We support and help community action groups who focus on re-use, repair, reduction, sharing, surplus food or composting.

In some planters are canes growing peas. All plants appear to be seasonal summer vegetables. To the back right of the image are some sheds and the community allotment continues right through the image
